(3.1) Research Paper Question and Topic Selection

Objectives:

• Review types of research papers (focus on argumentative vs. analytical research papers), what the thesis statements look like, the role of existing literature and how the sources are going to be used.
• Understand the assignment for Unit 3 - 4

·         Determine audience and purpose of their research paper

• Describe a general process of writing a research paper (the order and interdependence of the steps of research process)

·         Select and limit a topic for their final research paper through preliminary research

• Recognize the purpose and strategies of preliminary research (e.g. background info search) for “testing” their tentative research question

Part I: Complete Paraphrase/Quoting Worksheet  (10-15 min)
If you have not already done so, paste your work into your Google Notebooks so that we can go over them as a class. If you were absent in the last class, the document you need is PRACTICE WITH CITATIONS

Part III: Review Types of Papers (20 min) 2:35-2:55

(Slides 1-12). This will review some basic forms of research papers. Pay attention as you will be asked to select one of these types of papers for your final project.
Complete BEGINNING THE RESEARCH PROCESS HANDOUT in pairs.

Part IV: Begin Research Process (15 min)  2:55- 3:10

(Cover slides 12-16) Then watch a four minute VIDEO ON TOPIC SELECTION. Hold lecture on importance of narrowing topic as well as recognizing your audience. Introduce the types of papers they can write (I am flexible). You can not recycle papers from other classes. This is plagiarism and you will repeat 501.
Have students work on simple activity where they narrow large topics to smaller topics. 

Part V: Introduce Final Writing Assignment (5-10 min) 3:10-3:20

I will introduce the final assignments for this course (Unit 3 and Unit 4 are connected)
