IMRD Field Variation and Language Practice

Warm-Up: Vocabulary Share (2-3)
Student briefly presents

Part I: Discussion (5 min) 2:05-2:10
Small group discussion on the following topics:
1) Will you (or do you) write research papers like the ones we are reading in the IMRD unit?
2) Do you read IMRD type papers for your graduate program? If not, what type of papers do you read?
3) Does your field use the IMRD Format? What format do they use? How is it similar? How is it different?

Part II: Read to discover Diversity (25 min) 2:10-2:35
I will asking you to get into groups that best suit your field. If none of the following articles suit you, please stay seated and I will place you into a group. Once you are in groups, I will ask you to create and fill out a chart in your student notebooks. The chart should be similar to the following example: UGLY EXAMPLE STUDENT CHART.  You will then be asked to briefly explain your paper and language features to the class.

Work on handout that has writing tasks that help us to practice academic language commonly found in an IMRD paper (they are found in other academic writing as well)

Review major assignment for Unit 2

Part IV: Upload to Compass  (5-10 min) 3:10-3:20
We will take a few minutes out of class to clean and upload our final paper from unit one into the Compass Anti-Plagiarism software. Listen for directions.
