• To understand when to quotes and when not to quote
• Recognize common features used to integrate a quotes smoothly into a text

Part II: PPT lecture on reason for Quotation.  (40 min) 2:20-3:00

We have already discussed that quotation should be used sparingly (not frequently!). This part of today's class, I will try to give you some general rules that you should follow in decided IF you should quote content. In brief, you should only quote for the following reasons:

1. Memorable Language 

2. Concise Language

3. Provide Authority

4. Scare Quotes

This part of the lecture will be covered inthe QUOTATION PPT. The I will test your recognition skills and see if you are able to identify strong or weak quotations and why they are quoting. This will be in the handout QUOTATION WARM-UP. Finally, we will go over the answers and review with Handout QUOTING FOR ACADEMIC WRITING.

Part III:  How to Integrate a Quote (15-20 min) 3:00-3:20

We will hold a general discussion of the following features: 

 1) Frequency of Quoting

 2) Parts of Quotes

 3) Length of Quotes 

You can refer the second page of the handout QUOTATION: SOME GENERAL RULES as we go through this topic.We will then shift over the the handout titled, HANDOUT ON INTEGRATING SOURCES to look at some common language that is used to signal source integration.

Part IV: Practice
Time permitting... we will practice quote integration in our google drive workbooks or complete a writer's help task.
